Why is Beccy one of my Diamond Dozen?
I have known Beccy for a few years now and we have created some cunning plans together and had many an irreverent chuckle. Her ingenuity with managing resources needed and at hand; her ability to get people involved and enthused to bring positive change show her Creative Enabler mindset in action. Whether helping young people realise their potential or championing careers in science, engineering and maths Beccy is a definite Diamond Dozen-er.
My description of Beccy in six words…
STEM evangelist. Always empowering young people.
After completing her PhD in Molecular Biology, Beccy began working for the UK Government in regulating the release and marketing of GM products. On completion of secondments to the European commission and UN she moved to work for the Royal Society and for Professor Sir David King, the then Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor.
In 2001 she took on the role of reviewing how the UK Government was accessing science and technology in its planning for major disruptions, such as pandemic flu and terrorism. As a result she joined the Centre for Protection of National Infrastructure as Science and Technology Coordinator acting as a UK, and International liaison officer – ‘talent-spotting’ new science and technology which could be used by the Service.
Beccy has a passion for helping young people realise their potential which inspired her to become CEO of SATRO. She also sits on the Biochemistry Society’s Education and Policy Committees and is a Trustee of Surrey and Borders Mental Health Trust.
