Why is Alan one of my Diamond Dozen?
Alan and I met at SATRO’s STEMX Awards where we were celebrating excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Continuing our conversation as he showed me around McLaren’s flagship site in Woking reinforced to me that Alan truly is a Creative Enabler. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible in automotive manufacturing while remembering people are at the heart of it all puts him firmly in my Diamond Dozen.
My description of Alan in six words…
Automotive manufacturing guru. Inspiring excellence everywhere.
Alan has an international career within automotive manufacturing spanning 39 years. Having spent the last ten years at McLaren he has taken an automotive organisation with no genuine manufacturing core and developed it to what has been referred to as an “Iconic Manufacturing Organisation”. He has been responsible for the launch of 9 vehicles, including the P1 Ultimate Series Hybrid Supercar, a challenge usually only achieved across a 30 year time span in a normal original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
As well as his work at McLaren he holds Non-Executive positions on the Liverpool Super-Port committee, a Local Enterprise Partnership responsible for a £1,8Bn investment in shipping facilities at the historical Atlantic-facing port of Liverpool, and with California-based ICON Aircraft.
In 2014, he was recognised as one of the top 100 most influential manufacturing executives in the UK, by the KPMG/Lloyds bank partnership in conjunction with UK Manufacturer magazine. In early 2016 Alan became Executive Director of Operations at McLaren Automotive and will be leading the organisation on its progressive journey to produce over 4,000 Super cars per year.
